Excitement from a two year olds’ face
As his eyes light up and he runs into your leg for a hug,
When he hasn’t seen you in three months
Yet recognizes you right away;
Though your name comes out of his mouth
Sounding more like a character from Star Wars,
Unrecognizable to anyone else but you
Or the twinkle in Grandma’s eye
Maybe not recognizing you as her granddaughter
But realizing it’s a familiar face at least
As she laughs and gives you two kisses on the cheek
Saying “Muah, muah”
And everyone’s eyes glow as Uncle Jim points out
The existence of everyone present is because of this one woman
As almost outsiders, we see a glimpse of family life
The routine of getting three kids dressed and fed,
Noses wiped, shoes on the correct foot, out the door
Mom squeezes in college homework until one AM,
Grandma and Grandpa watch their shows with straining ears
To maintain order, ensure a good night’s sleep.
